Horsea Island |
 |
What is it like?
Horsea island is an inland salt water lake and is is able to support a wide variety of marine life, as it is topped up at high water from the sea. This also makes it less likely to "silt up" as some other inland lakes do. Due to this, and the fact that the average depth is 7m ,makes it the ideal site for our training courses.
Facilities include heated changing rooms, and a snack bar at the weekends.

| Purposely placed in the lake early 1997 for recreational diver use, is a variety of military hardware. All the main attractions are buoyed for ease of location, although we are quite likely to come across smaller objects scattered around the lake, such as mines and torpedoes, none of which are live.
The lake is 1350m long and is divided into three zones:
Zone one, to the east of the jetty in you can find an armoured engineering vehicle and a Land Rover ambulance. To the west lie an old road roller and a series of concrete pipe sections large enough to swim through.
Zone Two has two platforms, a recompression chamber, a Land Rover ambulance, and an armoured personnel carrier.
In Zone three you can find a Wessex Helicopter, a Land Rover Ambulance, a Naval Cheverton ferry boat, four bridge sections, as used by the Royal Engineers, now serving as platforms and a recompression chamber marking the end of the zone |

Horsea Island was originally set up as a training site for military divers, and we recreational divers are allowed to visit. It should be noted that it is an operational military base, and as such visiting civilian divers need to treat the facilities with respect. Each visitor must wear an identification tag at all times, even when diving, and must not enter marked prohibited areas. Trained staff and military security staff will assist visitors and their instructions should be followed at all times. |
