The Pentrych
Sunday the 6th of April dawned and with all the kit prepared and packed we set off from Crawley, in a light snow shower, and arrived in Brighton Marina to sunshine and (some) blue sky. However the people who had further to travel had horrendous journeys with severe weather conditions on the M25 and M23 - both of which were down to one lane in places !!! Meanwhile in Brighton, looking out into the Channel - there was barely a ripple – it was really good diving weather!
After everyone had arrived at the marina and we had the boat loaded with all the kit, the weather started to deteriorate. Very soon there was a blizzard, and the snow was starting to build up on our kit!
The sea state was starting to really kick up and Tom, who was looking a little green, decided that he was too manly to hold his breakfast down any longer!!
Once we reached the dive site it became all too apparent that we would not be diving, the waves were getting bigger and bigger. Getting into the water may have been possible, but getting back aboard would be been dangerous. The dive was called by the skipper and we started to head back.
The journey to the marina was turbulent to say the least! We were all huddled at the back of the boat sheltering from the wind, snow and waves, but despite this everyone was having a good laugh.
Fortunately, we got back to a very snowy marina, just in time for lunch, a few of us had a debrief over a burger in the pub!
So, all in all a mixed start to the season; we did get on the boat – no diving, but we did have a good time… and at least the weather can only get better for the next hardboat dive.
