Rescue Diver (A013)

The PADI Rescue Diver Course

The PADI Rescue diver course will expand your knowledge and experience beyond purely recreational level because you'll learn to look beyond yourself and consider the safety and well being of other divers. Although this course is serious, it is an enjoyable way to build your confidence.

"Diver, Diver…. Are you ok??! How would you react to a diving emergency? Can you assist your buddy until help arrives? Do you know how to prevent diving accidents before they happen?

These are hard questions that every responsible diver should ask himself or herself. Despite the best Open Water training and most careful dive planning, accidents can occur. There is probably no worse feeling than being helpless in such a situation. We can prepare you to be ready to prevent accidents and emergencies and to minimise problems should the unexpected occur. The PADI Rescue Certification also prepares you to begin your progression toward the Divemaster rating, which is the first step towards becoming a professional PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. Upon successful completion of this programme, you will have experienced the use of various rescue equipment, completed drills on panicky and unconscious divers, performed searches for lost divers and practiced artificial respiration on the surface with an unconscious diver. You will have the confidence in using your equipment and your skills under different circumstances and under stress.

As we have already said the Rescue diver course will prepare you to assist or carry out a rescue as part of a buddy team. This course will not only change your outlook as a diver, potentially it will change the way others divers (and dive resorts) see you!!

Your new skills and heightened awareness mark you out as a diver who can be relied on. We at Sussex Scuba take this responsibility very seriously and we ensure a very thorough, exhausting, but fun course. Essentially the course is made of three elements

  • Classroom
  • Pool work
  • Lake work

As with most PADI courses there is a certain amount of leeway in how the course is structured. For instance it is now possible to combine the lake and pool into one session. Rather than condense the course we extend the course to ensure all the skills, practices and scenarios are fully mastered. Our course is therefore scheduled over 4 days rather than the usual 2 or 3. The course outline is as follows:

Classroom session
After completing the home study and knowledge reviews before attending the course we then spend a full day in the classroom watching a DVD of the skills and discussing the various techniques. Often there is no right or wrong way and divers should be aware of all the options open to them. This is the first part of the course and this sets the standards and expectations for the rest of the course.

Pool session
This takes place over a 4 hour session in our pool at Crowborough. Here we show you the various skills and allow you to practice in a controlled and safe environment. The skills are as follows:

  • Self-rescue and diver stress
  • dive first aid
  • emergency management and equipment
  • swimming and non-swimming assists
  • panicked diver response
  • underwater problems
  • missing diver procedures
  • surfacing the unconscious diver
  • in water artificial respiration
  • egress (exits)
  • first aid procedures for pressure related accidents
  • dive accident scenarios

1st lake session
This usually takes place at Wraysbury over 5-6 hours and involves working through the pool skills again in preparation for the final days scenarios. After completing all the skills we have a first go at a rescue scenario. In the scenarios you are presented with a real life situation that might involve looking for lost divers, bringing injured divers to the surface - in short anything. You will be presented with a scenario and asked to manage and carry out a rescue. On this first day the instructors will help you if required. The intention of this practice run is to have a last chance to iron out any problem areas you may have

2nd lake session - Scenario day
Be prepared.. Anything can happen. This is where the fun really gets going. (well at least for us it does!!) You will be presented with a number of different scenarios and asked and expected to carry out an effective rescue. The scenarios are made as realistic as possible and in addition to the skills you have learned on the course you will be expected to call on your EFR skills which may include CPR, first aid, oxygen provision, or even use of an Automatic external defibrillator. Once again this will take around 5/6 hours dependent on how proficient you are at carrying out a rescue. As we said earlier this is serious fun!!!

You can see now why we are so confident that completing the course with us will change your attitudes to diving and diver safety and result in you being a more confident and able diver

The Rescue Diver course is obviously a very significant milestone in any divers career. In preparation for the course you are probably aware that you must complete the EFR (or similar) course. We have put together a preparation course that consists of EFR and DAN Oxygen Provider, and Automatic External Defibrillator(AED) courses which together complete the circle and result in even better trained and able rescue divers.
