PADI Junior Open Water Diver

The PADI Junior Open Water course is in effect the children's version of the full Open Water course. It is not a "watered down" course in any way as the child still needs to complete the same theory, classroom and pool exercises as an adult would. Where the course is different, is the approach of the Dive centre who is teaching the course, and their skills and attitudes towards young children.

As you can see from the About us page the instructors at Sussex Scuba have extensive experience of coaching children, having coached childrens sport for many years.

What is our approach to young Children?
As all children are very different in terms of their confidence and abilities we make sure that we put a programme together that reflects the child's own skill and confidence. In terms of the classroom and theory work, we do not put a child in the classroom with other adults. We would normally put a programme of several afternoons (after School) or early evenings. This would be spread over a number of weeks so as not to put too much pressure on the child. This can be with a parent present if you and the child wish it. Once the child has worked through the theory they would then join in with a pool session with other people. The group would be kept smaller that usual and we tend to put additional staff in the pool to support the child. Once again this is all based on the needs of a particular child

Why PADI Junior Open Water?
As a certified PADI Junior Open Water Diver, the most widely recognised and respected rating in the world; you are able to dive either with a parent or certified PADI Professional (die Divemaster or Instructor) However the nature of the diving partner and the actual depth is controlled by a chides age. as follows

Age Restrictions
Essentially the Junior open Water course is the same as the adult course. There are a few differences relating to the depths the child can dive to as follows:

10-11 year olds must dive with a certified adult diver or an instructor and to a maximum depth of 12m

12-13 year olds can dive to 18m with a certified adult.

Once the child reaches the age of 14 they can be upgraded to the Full Open Water Course, when the depths and restrictions are the same as an adult

What do I need to start?
Virtually anyone who is in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can earn a PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification. You must be 10 years old to begin the PADI Junior Open Water Diver programme.

What does the course involve?
The course is very flexible and can be spread over as long or as short a period as you like. The theory part involves the child reading through the manual a chapter at a time. After each chapter the child would then come to the classroom and watch a DVD that explains the chapter in more detail. We then work through any issues the child may have. The session finishes off with a mini test of 10 question. Once again depending on the age or ability of the child we may do one or two chapters per session. Once we have completed the knowledge reviews the next step is to go to the pool and start the fun part - diving !! In the pool we learn and practice the basic skills required before we can go diving. All groups are kept small, usually a maximum of 4 people, ensuring personal attention at all times. (See profiles of our instructors to get a feel of how we will look after you). If you are still unsure of any aspects of the course then our instructors are available to assist during the week if you need it.

The second week end will involve a trip to the lake on Saturday and Sunday where we can practice the skills you have learned and have an enjoyable dive at the same time !

Our Facilities
As well as our own classroom equipped with Computer, projector, TV and a FULL range of all PADI Course material, all our Open Water Courses take place at Crowborough Leisure centre. It is important to note we have full and exclusive usage of the entire 33m long pool. We do not rent 1 or 2 lanes, nor are we limited to a 10m long pool. As a result we are able to give our students pleanty of room to swim around, and to work on the most important skill of all - buoyancy

Class Sizes
To ensure that all students are looked after properly, pool class sizes rarely exceed 4 people. In addition to the Instructor there will also be a certified assistant. This way we can ensure that all students receive the care and attention that they need. When courses are advertised as having room for 8 people please note that this will be split into two groups in the pool, each with its own instructor
